Wow! It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog post here. But that’s not because I’ve been on a hiatus! In fact, lots has been happening, it’s just all happening over at my other website, Just Write For Kids Australia. So, let me tell you a bit about what’s been going on over there.
I have been working on both developing my children’s writing as well as dipping my toe into the business world. My portfolio of skills has grown rapidly as I’ve learned about organisational skills, planning, networking, social media secrets, marketing, advertising, graphic design and publicity. I’ve kept up with my reviews and interviews, and the occasional educationally-focused activity have found their way in.
Just Write For Kids has had a few firsts and exciting developments. I have established a blog tour service for children’s authors and illustrators! It’s called Books On Tour, and it is essentially a virtual stint of blog posts over a given period, which focuses on the background creation, information, potential and possibilities of a brand new book and its creator. It’s lots of fun and includes reviews, interviews, videos, activities, articles, photography, book giveaways and sometimes even a party! I also get the opportunity to coordinate with other bloggers by organising a schedule of appearances at these other sites. So that’s where I’ve been practising my publicity, marketing and design skills!
For more details on this service please go here: www.justkidslit.com/books-on-tour.
Just Write For Kids also ran its first competition! Titled, Reinventing the Look, I enlisted a small team of judges (thank you, Debra Tidball, Renee Price, Anil Tortop and Kathy Creamer) to assist with the tough decision of choosing an illustration to be the new banner for the brand. We had some spectacular entries, which was very exciting to see my old image reinterpreted in so many different ways. In the end, we couldn’t go past the talents of Jason Howe, fine art and design illustrator-extraordinaire! Take a look!
Finally, I’ll finish with my excitement and anticipation as I prepare for the biggest professional development conference of the year. I will be attending the Meet the Publishers KidLitVic Conference next weekend, a day of discussion panels with Australia’s leading publishers, opportunity for manuscript assessment, workshops and mingling with inspiring and talented creatives. I have my new business cards ready, my manuscripts printed and my questions ready. Wish me luck! And watch this space for a follow up blog post all about the day.
Happy reading, writing and being creative!
